Toddlers & Preschool
(approximately 3.5-6 years)
Our Toddler & Preschool Room offers a space for our curious toddlers to explore both indoors and outdoors, as well as opportunities for our older children throughout the day to be involved in contributing to the curriculum, helping to make decisions about what is set up, and sharing their ideas. We support childhood learning with a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and supportive of all children during this age of discovery and wonder. Teachers work alongside the children to set up an environment which is challenging, provides curiosity and active exploration.
Children’s self-help skills are very important at this stage and children are supported to go to the toilet on their own (however facilities are still available for children still developing this skill that may be in nappies or toilet training still), wash hands, dress themselves, and opportunities to serve up their own morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
The children have regular mat times throughout the day where they start the day together with a karakia, learn songs, stories and are encouraged to share things with the other children. We value that each child learns at their own pace and when they are ready, and that play is children’s work.
For new children, we encourage 3 settling visits, approximately 2 weeks before your child’s start date to ensure a smooth and settled transition for both you and your child. Children transitioning from our Infants and Toddler Room will have regular accompanied visits over a one month period, to get familiar with their new environment and meet their new friends and teachers, ensuring this is a positive step in their learning journey. Our Transition Policy is available by asking a member of the team.
Transition to School Programme
We believe in building a foundation for children to transition to school as confident, capable learners. We encourage your child to dress themselves independently, pack and unpack their own bags, go to the toilet on their own, wash their hands, sit on the mat, listen and develop social skills and confidence within large groups (which is the largest focus). Skills such as writing their name, holding a pencil correctly, counting, recognising letters and numbers are all aspects where we place a strong emphasis on learning experiences each day. We have a current classroom where the 4 yr olds have the opportunity and space to develop all of these skills alongside a teacher, up to 3 times a day.
Our talented chef creates healthy and well-balanced meals, providing the nutrition and energy our preschoolers need for all aspects of their growth and development. Visit our Nutrition page to find out more and see an example menu.
As well as daily face-to-face catch ups about your child’s day at drop off and pick up time, we use Storypark to share photos, videos and audio of your child’s development so you never miss out on those special moments. Storypark also offer a handy mobile app so can have updates right to your smartphone.
